THE TOP 7 REASONS YOU ARE NOT LOSING WEIGHT
“I’ve been trying to lose weight and it just won’t budge.”
“I’ve tried every diet out there and just keep failing to take the weight off and keep it off.”
“I can’t even look at myself in the mirror. I hate my body and what my disease has done to it.”
“I won’t wear a bathing suit. No one wants to see me half naked. I don’t even want to see me half naked!”
“I don’t want my spouse seeing me naked, so we keep the lights off.”
Does any of this sound familiar? I hear statements like this all the time. Weight issues and not knowing what to eat to lose weight and feel great are two of the biggest concerns for my clients.
Chronic illness can cause fatigue, lack of energy from fatigue can lead to weight gain. The medications we have to take can put weight on us without us actually eating more or doing anything different.
It is frustrating! I know. But….
Most people don’t know what they should be eating for their specific body and for their specific health issues. There is no one way for everyone.
Nutrition is a very personal science and you can’t google what “you” should be eating and get real, lasting results.
Most people are not totally aware of all their food choices in a given day. A few bites off my kids plate, just a few pieces of this, or handful of that… it all adds up.
For the next few weeks, I want to help you understand what is stopping you from losing weight (or gaining it… I see you my IBD friends) and how to change your relationship with your body and food so you can get the results you want.
Let’s start with the top 7 reasons you are not able to reach your goal weight.
-
Not consistent with food choices.
Without a plan, it is hard to stay the course. There is temptation everywhere and when you feel sick, it is easy to feel like you deserve a “reward” for all you are dealing with. That reward often comes in the form of chocolate cake, or fried foods, or whatever your Achilles heel of food may be.
2. Binging on sugar and caffeine to stay awake due to lack of energy.
Lack of energy can come from your illness, from your lifestyle, from your food choices. It is a big connected circle.
3. Snacking when you are stressed, depressed, anxious, but not actually hungry.
You will first need to become aware and acknowledge that you are doing this, and then learn to replace those habits with new, healthier ones.
4. Not moving enough.
See bullet two. Once again, it is all connected.
5. Not sleeping well.
Pain, hormone changes, night sweats from medications, and stress can all get in the way of sleep. Without sleep, we have no energy, with no energy…see bullet two. (Are you seeing the pattern here?)
6. You are chronically stressed and anxious which causes the body to hang on to fat.
Stress on the body and stress in your life, increases inflammation. Inflammation leads to chronic illness. Chronic illness can then cause stress, creating a vicious cycle that is probably happening in your body right now.
7. You don’t know the right foods for your body.
Yes, there are some general rules to nutrition, but please hear this… there is no one way of eating that is going to work for everyone. You can’t google “meal-plan to lose weight” and actually have long-term success. You need to work with someone who can help you and your specific body. There is no quick fix that is sustainable.
